Congressman Joe Kennedy III today demanded an extension of the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period until at least December 23 following reports of widespread outages and glitches on the last day consumers can choose coverage for next year. In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma, Kennedy expressed outrage that there was not an immediate effort to address errors and coordinate outreach to impacted Americans. Online outages and website errors can be unexpected and unintentional, but the Trump Administration's disinterest in addressing them shows how little they care for Americans' health coverage. Extending the deadline for at least one week will ensure that the approximately 100,000 consumers impacted can access the care and coverage they need and deserve. Anything less than an immediate extension and robust public awareness campaign is unacceptable.
