Congressman Joe Kennedy III today released the following statement after voting against the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). "Like countless American communities, the cities and towns in my district bear the economic scars of trade deals that, however well-intentioned, made our workers, industries and environment collateral damage in a rapidly globalizing world. "The renegotiation of NAFTA gives this generation a chance to do things differently. Although Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats successfully strengthened USMCA far beyond the President's initial proposal, we remain limited by an Administration that orients its economic policies exclusively around corporate interests and denies the very existence of climate change. "By failing to fully remedy the difficult challenge of labor law enforcement, we risk doubling-down on the kind of trickle-down capitalism that has gutted the wages, rights and protections of American workers. And by failing to set binding environmental standards and codify the goals of the Paris Agreement, USMCA sidesteps an opportunity to address climate change that we simply cannot afford to leave on the table. "The rising generation faces two deeply intertwined crises: an economy that increasingly prices them out of basic economic security and a planet on the brink.
