Ron Kind voted in favor of the American SAFE Act of 2015, which would enhance and improve background checks and screening for Syria refugees. Below is his statement: In the wake of the recent attacks by ISIS our top priority must be doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the American people, both here and abroad. Currently, it takes between 18 and 24 months for each individual, over 75% of whom are women and children, to enter the US. While the current process for Syrian refugees to enter the country is extensive, there are additional common sense actions we can take to make it more secure. One step to enhance security is to increase background checks for Syrian refugees entering the United States. This legislation requires multiple Federal intelligence, security, and law enforcement agencies to work together to verify that those entering the US don't pose a danger to the country. The legislation today strikes a good balance between protecting our national security while not implementing draconian policies that go against the values on which our country was founded. There are no provisions in the legislation that prohibit refugees from entering the US, it does not defund the refugee program or jeopardize our government funding, and it does not discriminate based on religious affiliation. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
