Nogis of the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division on being awarded the Soldier’s Medal, recognizing his extraordinary heroism and selfless service. On October 26, 2024, Sgt. Nogis responded to a desperate call for help involving two individuals stranded in the waters of the Pearl Harbor Ship Channel. With Harbor Patrol unable to immediately respond, Sgt. Nogis relied on his survival training and quick thinking. He secured the only available vessel, a small, youth-sized boogie board, and set out into dangerous waters. For more than four hours and two miles, Sgt. Nogis battled strong currents, waves exceeding three feet, exhaustion, and dangerous ocean conditions. After reaching the victims, he continued swimming against the current to bring them to safety, ultimately rescuing both individuals and helping ensure they survived. His willingness to risk his own life for others is a great example of the courage, selflessness, and the highest traditions of military service. Sgt. Nogis’ actions make the CNMI proud, and I congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition. Thank you, Sgt. Nogis, for your service, your courage, and your commitment to saving others.
