Joseph Ozbourn, an Illinois native who gave his life to save his fellow Marines. As someone originally from Tinian, this story hits especially close to home. During the fierce fighting in July 1944, Pvt. Ozbourn was wounded while clearing enemy positions when he realized a live grenade in his hand threatened the lives of the Marines fighting beside him. With no time and no safe way to throw it, he made the decision to shield his fellow Marines by falling on the grenade, sacrificing his own life to save theirs. Our islands may be small, but their role in World War II was pivotal, and the courage displayed on our shores helped shape the course of world history. Stories like Pvt. Ozbourn’s remind us that the Northern Marianas are not just a strategic location, but a place where young men and women, indigenous and non-indigenous, showed unimaginable bravery and selflessness.
