Unless this bill is signed into law, roughly 800,000 thousand of federal workers will not receive back pay for the income they would have generated had the shutdown not occurred. President Barack Obama has said he would sign the law if it makes it to his desk. It is now up to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to hold a vote on the bill in the Senate. Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-Channahon) today released the following statement outlining House Republicans' continued efforts to find areas of bipartisan agreement during the partial government shutdown. "Today House Republicans and Democrats came together to ensure that hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers will receive the back pay they and their families so badly need," said Kinzinger. I call on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to immediately hold a vote on this bill. If we can all come together and agree on back pay for federal employees, surely there are other areas we can where we can begin finding solutions. This past week, the Republican led House of Representative has advanced 7 bills with bipartisan support that would provide funding for critical federal agencies and programs. The bills, if passed by the Senate and signed by the President, would: fund veterans benefits (H.J.Res.72),ensure our National Guard and reservists get paid (H.R. 3230),fund nutrition programs for impoverished women and children (H.J. Res. 75),fund federal emergency response services (H.J. Res. 85),reopen our national parks (H.J.Res.70),allow the District of Columbia to expend their local funds (H.J.Res.71),and reopen the National Institutes of Health and ensure that all patients have access to clinical trials (H.J.Res.73). Additionally, the House passed legislation that instructs the Secretary of Defense to allow furloughed military chaplains to perform religious services on property owned and maintained by the Department of Defense.
