They were joined by Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) and Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) as original cosponsors of the resolution. Thirty years ago, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the most pivotal domino in advancing democracy across Central and Eastern Europe, said Chairman Keating. As we commemorated this historic moment this past weekend, we must also recognize concerning trends that show the erosion of the rule of law and a weakening of democratic institutions among our European allies. Tomorrow, our Subcommittee will hold a hearing on upholding democratic values in the NATO alliance to examine these trends. Thirty years on from the spread of democracy, we must deliberately recommit ourselves to reaffirming and strengthening our democratic values. That is the best way we can honor our shared history. We know that communism does not work. In the dark moments of the Cold War, the oppressed saw a beacon of hope in the United States. Thirty years ago, the Berlin Wall came down and with it, went the socialist ideology that divided the city and the world, said Ranking Member Kinzinger. I'm proud to join my colleagues in recognizing this anniversary, and celebrate such a defining moment in time. The pro-democratic values triumphed when the people of Berlin chose to tear down that wall.' And in that moment, America was strengthened by the support of allies around the world who share our freedom-loving values. Thirty years ago, as a student visiting the city, I was able to grab a sledgehammer and knock some chunks out of the Berlin Wall, and I continue to carry a piece of it with me to this very day, said Congressman Kind. I'm proud to help introduce this resolution to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall. It serves as a powerful reminder that when a group of individuals set aside their differences and work together, they can create tremendous changeuniting families, cities, and countries.
