At the end of last year, Congressman Kinzinger was proud to support legislation that banned the use of gag order clauses, which prohibited pharmacists from telling patients when it would save them money to pay with cash instead of paying the required co-pay through their insurance policy. This ban immediately went into effect for private insurance plans after it was signed into law, and it will go into effect for Medicare beneficiaries on January 1, 2020. In June, Congressman Kinzinger co-authored bipartisan legislation that quickly passed the House with overwhelming support and was signed into law by September 27, 2019. The Fair and Accurate Medicaid Pricing Act (H.R. 3276) closed a loophole that allowed pharmaceutical companies to charge higher prices for medications and send the bill to the taxpayers. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates legislation-turned-law will save taxpayers $600 million per year. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Congressman Kinzinger continues to fight for increased access to generic medications, which account for 90% of the prescriptions filled in the United States and have an average copay of less than $10. Because improved access to these generic versions of prescription medication mean lower drug costs for his constituents, Congressman Kinzinger actively supports legislative measures that spur competition and break down barriers for developers looking to enter the market.
