The Preserving Existing Nuclear Energy Generation Act is the House companion to a bipartisan effort by the Senate (S. 4897), and is increasingly important to communities like those in Illinois' 16th Congressional District, where nuclear generating stations are at continued risk of closure. Following introduction of the H.R. 9015 legislation with his colleague Congressman Mike Doyle (D-PA), Congressman Kinzinger released this statement: The greatest source of zero-emission bulk power in this country is slowly dying on the vine. In Illinois, 11 operating nuclear reactors including eight in the 16th District provide 88% of the state's emission-free electricity. But a combination of factors, including misguided fears about nuclear power, have hampered the political will to ensure this revolutionary technology continues to power our neighborhoods, schools, and communities. I believe in a State's right to determine its own energy portfolio. But what I'm seeing is massive public support across Illinois for nuclear being met with political gridlock in Springfield. So now, it's time for a federal solution. The Preserving Existing Nuclear Energy Generation Act is designed to help save nuclear plants that are on the chopping block--including Byron and Dresden here in our backyard--by providing financial credits through an Emissions Avoidance Program. It also seeks to soften the blow to local communities who suffer the most near-term damage from the closure of these plants by providing resources to help shore up immediate budgetary impacts of local governments so that we can preserve essential municipal services and promote economic development. I want to thank Senators Barrasso and Whitehouse for leading the way on things in the Senate, and greatly appreciate my colleague Congressman Doyle for once again partnering with me in support of nuclear power. This bill is only a first step, and I look forward to continuing our conversations on nuclear so that we may act quickly and decisively in the 117th Congress.
