As education costs and student debt continue to mount, so has the need to ensure that students and taxpayers receive a worthwhile return on their investment in their career. “A good education is the foundation for building a career and a middle-class life, but too many students are completing training programs only to learn too late and after too much debt, that their programs failed to meet the standards necessary to help them start their career,” said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. The Protecting Students from Worthless Degree Act would require that all higher education programs meet any federal or state accreditation and licensing requirements necessary for graduates to enter their intended occupation. Institutions failing to properly prepare their students by meeting these requirements would no longer be eligible for federal student financial assistance, including Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, or G.I. Bill benefits. Congressman Krishnamoorthi is proud to have worked on this legislation with his co-lead Congressman Mark Takano, as well as Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon who introduced a previous version of the bill in the 114th Congress and will be introducing the Senate companion in the current Congress. “This is a travesty for both students and taxpayers,” Krishnamoorthi added. “That’s why I’m introducing the Protecting Students from Worthless Degrees Act to hold institutions accountable by ensuring that taxpayer dollars only go to programs that fulfill their promise of preparing students for a career.
