In response to calls from Rep. Doug Lamborn, the Department of Education is looking into potential violations of anti-terrorism laws by San Francisco State University (SFSU). In September, San Francisco State University hosted known terrorist Leila Khaled for a virtual lecture to university students. Leila Khaled hijacked two planes in 1969 and 1970 with members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is a designated terrorist organization by the United States, Israel, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Australia, and Japan. SFSU is potentially in violation of 18 U.S. Code Section 2339B, which states that whoever knowingly provides material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization, or attempts or conspires to do so, shall be fined or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. Congressman Lamborn issued the following statement: I'm pleased to see Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has answered my calls for an investigation into this important matter. I'm concerned that SFSU may be misusing federal funds to host terrorists to indoctrinateits students. I'm also concerned this event may have violated 18 U.S. Code Section 2339B by providing material support to a terrorist organization. Welcoming foreign terrorists to ouruniversities is deeply un-American. I look forward to continuing my work with the Administration to ensure U.S. law is upheld. In accordance with Rep. Lamborn's request, the Department of Education has also referred the case to the Justice Department and the Department of Treasury for investigation.
