President Trump signed a one-page memorandum authorizing the Department of Defense to create the new command. This new command will oversee and organize space operations, accelerate technical advances, and find more effective ways to defend U.S. assets in space to include the constellations of satellites the U.S. military relies upon on for navigation, communications, and surveillance. Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) issued the following statement regarding the announcement: "I am very pleased to see thepresident moving forward with the decision to reestablish a U.S. Space Command.Like theadministration, we in Colorado Springs understand the seriousness and immediacy of the growing threats to our space assets.Establishing U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs is the only serious option for providing the desired capability on the shortest, most cost-effective timeline, and is a natural long-term home for this exciting new organization.Colorado is the epicenter of the national security space enterprise and was home to the original Space Command for 17 years.Today, Colorado Springs is home to Air Force Space Command and the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, the two primary organizations from which a Space Command will be molded - including the expansive infrastructure on Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases.
