This afternoon, Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) sent a letter with other Members of Congress urging Secretary Mike Pompeo to formally recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. He issued the following statement in response: Congressman Lamborn said:I am pleased to send this letter to Secretary Pompeo on the important recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. President Trump made history when he recognized the reality of Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel and the Jewish people. It is time for us to continue this important work and recognize another reality that in 1981, Israel established sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Ambassador Nikki Haley corrected years of bad U.S. policy when she voted against the United Nations' annual resolution condemning Israeli presence in the region, and a statement from Congress about it is long overdue. With Iran's increasing influence in the region, it is more important than ever to ensure that Israel continues to defend the Golan from Iranian control. Thank you to Representative Scott Perry and my colleagues for working on this important letter with me. Congressman Perry, who co-led the letter, said: I commend the Trump Administration, Secretary Pompeo, and Ambassador Haley for their strong statement in the UN of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights. I'm proud to send this letter to the Administration to continue the momentum on this important issue. At a time when Iran continues to expand its control in the region and has put its crosshairs on seizing the Golan Heights from Israel, it's a critical time for the US to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
