I am deeply concerned by the events surrounding Secretary Spencer's dismissal. His professional pedigree speaks for itself in his commitment to holding SEALS to the highest degree of professionalism and morality, consistent with the elite role they occupy. Unfortunately, President Trump's actions in recent weeks have continued a pattern of unstable and reckless conduct toward the military. By interfering in appropriate military administrative channels, President Trump is doing lasting damage to the fabric of good order and discipline that will take years if not generations to repair. His actions send a dangerous message to special operations forces that the laws of war do not always apply. As Americans, we understand what it means to value human rights and the rule of law, as they are concepts woven into our founding documents, from the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution. We uphold these values in times of peace and war, and it remains a cornerstone of American exceptionalism. We must ensure that our special operators remain known as the Quiet Professionals I know they are, acting with valor, courage, honor, and a commitment to accountability.
