Michael Flynn was entrusted with guiding policies integral to the defense of our nation, and it is clear he violated that trust. Equally worrying, he lied about contacts with Russian officials in the lead up to the inauguration, contacts that rightfully raise questions about the Trump campaign, transition, and Administration’s cozy relationship with a country that has actively sought to undermine our democracy. This development only further reinforces my concerns about the President’s judgment, and I am worried that his hiring decisions, his policies, and his tweets are compromising our security and our position as a global leader. “Today’s charges, coming just one month after the indictments of Trump campaign aides Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, are further validation of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
