Much of the work under the contract will be carried out at Electric Boat facilities in Rhode Island, and it includes an option for a tenth ship, which raises the potential contract value to approximately $24 billion. In addition, eight of the ships produced will include the Virginia Payload Module (VPM), which will be built at a newly constructed Quonset Point facility. The Block V multi-year contract awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat is the largest Navy contract in history and is good news for Rhode Island. The agreement directly supports the leading defense industry work being done on the shores of Rhode Island's Second Congressional District. The new contract backs our state's workforce and, most importantly, promotes long-term stability for our submarine fleet, which will further enhance national security by ensuring we have the most capable submarines and naval technology available in the years to come. The new Virginia Payload Module represents a leap forward in capability for our submariners. The next-generation of submarines will enable new missions by our special operations forces and support additional sensors and payloads to maintain our tactical edge.
