Today, Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) made the following statement after General Motor's announcement about job cuts: As many prepare to enjoy this holiday season with family and friends, thousands of autoworkers abruptly received word that they must now prepare to be unemployed. This decision will have a profoundly damaging effect on American workers and families; many of whom live in communities in dire need of more job opportunities, not less. As the Representative of constituents who will be directly affected by the Metro Detroit area plant closures, this decision is an especially hard-hit home to the Motor City and many Michiganders. Too many hard-working Americans face challenges in safeguarding worker's rights and job security protections all while dealing with the daily trials of income inequality. This is a time for us to come together and do all we can to support our American workforce. I have spoken with the UAW Regional Director in Michigan, and I look forward to working with them to find solutions and support for those who have been affected by these closures and cuts. Innovation and upward mobility of our American companies is certainly important for our economy; however, this success should not be at the expense of our American workforce. I have personally reached out to the GM CEO to speak on this matter and am awaiting a response. Also, Congress must do more to ensure that our laws and regulation protect our American workers as our auto industries continues their legacy as one of the great prides of our nation.
