Today, Congresswoman Lawrence issued the following statement, in response to a report released by the President's Task Force on the U.S. Postal Service: This report is the product of a secretive, closed-door process that excluded the American people. Unsurprisingly, its recommendations are not a serious effort to help the Postal Service address its long-term future. As a former employee of the Postal Service for over 30 years, I know what this public service means to people and am committed to its true success. From the beginning, the President's Postal Task Force has been a bad-faith effort by the Trump Administration to attack our public postal service and postal workers. It is not focused on the important, long-term goal of affordable, public mail delivery for every American. Instead, the Administration began the Task Force with questionable motives and proposed privatizing the Postal Service, threatening to take away basic mail service from millions of Americans. The Task Force also refused to operate in a transparent manner and engage with Congress. As a member of the Oversight Committee, I demanded the Task Force turn over documents showing who it met with and how it came up with its recommendations, but it did not comply. The Postal Service is a government institution with a mission of public service: to ensure that all Americans can have reliable mail service, no matter who they are or where they live. Without a well-functioning public Postal Service, many Americans would lose access to affordable mail delivery that their families, businesses, and lives rely on. In contrast to this hasty and non-transparent report, I and my colleagues in Congress have spent years negotiating the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act, which would put the Postal Service on a more sustainable path. This bill has overwhelming support from Democrats, Republicans, and postal stakeholders.
