https://lawrence.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congresswomen-lawrence-and-plaskett-lead-letter-president-trump Congresswomen Lawrence and Plaskett Lead Letter to President Trump Condemning His Treatment of African American Women Journalists 2018-11-16 2018 2018-11 Democrat House MI Brenda Lawrence L000581 lawrence.house.gov     legacy Washington, DC Today, Representatives Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) and Stacey Plaskett (VI) led a letter to President Donald Trump which raises concerns with his denigrating treatment of journalists, specifically his recent berating of three African American women journalists; Abby Phillip, April Ryan and Yamiche Alcindor. Equally important, the letter calls for an apology to these three women and to the American public. African American women in the United States have historically endured the duality of race and gender discrimination, intimidation and humiliation. President Trump has a history of berating and insulting women and minorities and his recent rhetoric only serves to perpetuate the deprecation of women, in particular African American women. As Vice Chair of the Democratic Women's Working Group (DWWG), an Executive Board Member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and as an African American woman, I believe it is my duty to stand up and speak out against this kind of damaging and dangerous rhetoric. I am proud to join my colleagues in the DWWG and the CBC to make a clear and bold statement that these kinds of attacks are simply unacceptable. -Rep. Brenda L. Lawrence The freedom of the press should not be sacrificed because the President condemns its role in the world. The press is a mule used to express the sentiments of not only African Americans, but the American people. African American female journalists have changed the course of history through literature, spoken word and on the media. We will continue to advocate on behalf of the women that tell our story and the story of the American people. -Rep. Stacey Plaskett Lawrence and Plaskett were joined in sending the letter by 23 colleagues from the Democratic Women's Working Group and the Congressional Black Caucus. Full text of the letter and signatories can be found here. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
