Lawrence Statement on House Passage of the Annual Defense Authorization Bill 2020-12-08 2020 2020-12 Democrat Senate MI Brenda Lawrence L000581 lawrence.house.gov     legacy Washington, D.C.- Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement after the House passed the Conference Report to Accompany H.R. 6395, the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, in a strong bipartisan vote. For six decades, Congress has passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to ensure our military stands ready in the face of growing threats facing our country, said Rep. Lawrence. This year, I am thrilled that, in a bipartisan manner, Congress has included language that would establish an independent commission to make binding recommendations to remove names and symbols of the Confederacy from all assets of the Department of Defense, which is long overdue. Additionally, this legislation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the well-being of our service men and women by including a three percent pay increase and strengthens the paid parental leave provisions included in last year's NDAA. The legislation includes many wins for women and families, including paid family leave; greater child care availability and funding, protections to ensure that the career of a servicemember is not unduly affected by pregnancy or childbirth; measures to create a task force on domestic violence within the military services; and much more. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
