Lawson Announces 2018-19 Recipients of the Gilman International Scholarship U.S. Rep. Lawson Announces 2018-19 Recipients of the Gilman International Scholarship WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) today announced that ten outstanding students from the Florida's Fifth Congressional District have been awarded the highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad during the 2018-2019 academic year. More than 13,000 students nationwide applied for the Gilman scholarship, and 10 students from Rep. Lawson's district were among the those awarded scholarships. This scholarship provides a valuable opportunity for learning and growth through cultural exchange, Rep. Lawson said. These scholars have the chance to engage with their world and academic disciplines through this experience, and I look forward to the new global perspectives and conversations they will bring back to our community. The scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. In the academic year 2018-19, over 3,000 U.S. students benefited from the Gilman Program, 56 percent gaining language skills in languages deemed critical by U.S. national security. Since the scholarship's inception, 31,000 American students from more than 1,335 colleges and universities, and diverse backgrounds have studied or interned abroad in 151 countries.
