Ms. Hernandez's work, "Mi Familia es Mi Corazon" will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the year-long exhibit sponsored by more than 300 Members of Congress."We chose this piece because it was technically well executed," said Bill Cone, one of the judges for the competition and a Production Designer for Pixar Animation Studios. "It had a simple graphic strength, and expressed a personal sentiment that could be understood by people of diverse backgrounds." More than 50 high school students from the 9th Congressional District of California, which includes Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont, entered the competition. "Mi Familia es Mi Corazon" was chosen in May to represent California's Ninth Congressional District by a panel of judges following a month long exhibit in Oakland. "We are very proud to have Susana's work represent our District in the Capitol during the An Artistic Discovery exhibit," said Congresswoman Lee. "This is a great opportunity to highlight the ways in which art education can enrich the lives of our young people." "Art is my passion. I love using my imagination to create art that reflects my thoughts and dreams as I see them. I can't imagine a world where people do not express themselves creatively," said Susana Hernandez. "I am very proud and honored to have my art displayed in the Capital and to able to express my love for mi familia." "We must always remember that activities such as art, music and sports are essential to students' development and to our sense of identity, community, and pride," said Lee.
