This funding will help ensure that children aren't walking to school or waiting for the bus in the street, said Lee. Building sidewalks is about increasing public safety and increasing mobility for people with disabilities. It is a small, but important part of building healthy, safe communities. The conference report for the fiscal year 2006 Treasury, Transportation, HUD, Judiciary, District of Colombia Appropriations Act, approved by the House today included $650,000 for sidewalks and streetscape improvements in Ashland, Cherryland, and Castro Valley. Funding for projects in the unincorporated areas of Alameda County, which include Ashland, Cherryland and Castro Valley, has been a priority for Lee since they were added to her Congressional District during the redistricting process that followed the 2000 census. In total, Lee has brought in more than $2.5 million for public safety sidewalk projects in these areas, which historically have not received the same degree of attention from federal funding as the incorporated parts of the county.
