This bill, I'm sorry to say, does not do that, said Lee. What does it say about our priorities that this bill funds an $8 billion missile defense program that has consistently failed, will never protect us from terrorists, but shortchanges other critical security priorities that keep nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists and protect our ports from terrorist attack? Lee supported an amendment to the bill, offered by Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair, Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), calling on the President to provide to Congress an exit strategy for the conflict in Iraq. Over two years have passed since this unnecessary war in Iraq began and the President has not offered the slightest hint of how long our occupation will last, said Lee. The President needs to be honest with American people and tell us what his plan is to bring our troops home. Lee also supported an amendment offered by Representatives Susan Davis (D-CA), Jane Harman (D-CA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), to lift the ban on privately financed abortions at US military facilities overseas. This common sense amendment allows these military women stationed overseas and their dependents to exercise the same rights as women in this country: the right to comprehensive family planning, including access to a safe, legal abortion, said Lee. Lee criticized Republican decision to rule out of order several amendments offered by Democrats including, one she authored to prevent the use of taxpayer funds from being used to overthrow democratically elected governments and another, offered by Representative John Spratt (D-SC) to increase funding for nuclear nonproliferation programs by shifting funds from missile defense. ### Next Article | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
