Res. 76, to establish a national holiday in honor of labor leader, Cesar Chavez: Csar Chvez was a great civil and human rights leader and such an important historical figure of our Nation. This resolution, H.Res.76, is a great way to pay tribute to the man and his many accomplishments. Csar made a difference not only for Latinos and migrant workers, but for the poor and the working poor. And he also built a coalition of conscience across racial and economic boundaries. I am reminded of the political support Csar provided to me during my first campaign for the California legislature For that I will always be grateful. He was truly a hero who showed that one person can make a difference. I considered it an honor to walk in his funeral procession behind his humble wooden coffin, filled with pride for all he did for the world, our country and my home state. So, I was very proud that California was the first state to establish a legal holiday in his honor, which inspired nine additional states (Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and Rhode Island) to declare holidays. It has been eight years since California launched this national movement and it continues to grow. Yesterday the country commemorated his birthday as nationwide efforts took place in over 25 states, building momentum to make this long overdue national tribute a reality. It is now past time for Congress to act. As an original co-sponsor of H.Res.76, I urge my colleagues to join us in supporting the movement for a national holiday and vote for the resolution to celebrate the life and legacy of Csar Chvez.
