It is frankly frightening the degree of influence that the far right of the Republican base has over this White House. While I had concerns about Ms. Miers, particularly about her independence from the White House, I believe that she deserved a fair hearing in the Senate. Unfortunately, Ms. Miers never got a hearing, and the only voices that were heard were those who want to hijack the nomination process to pack the Supreme Court with Justices who will advance their narrow political agenda. In choosing a replacement for Ms. Miers, President Bush should not reward the bullying of his right wing base.
