The funding is being made available through DOE's Strengthening Institution Grant Program and will be used to develop basic skills classes in math and writing and to implement an assessment-tracking system at Berkeley City College. Berkeley City College will receive $400,000 in grant funding annually for the next five years to develop model cross-disciplinary curricula to improve and track student success in basic skills and to ease their transition to four-year universities and job-training classes. I am pleased that the Peralta Community College District and Berkeley City College will receive this important funding; it comes at a time when community colleges face significant budget cuts because of California's financial crisis, Congresswoman Lee said.
