Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) introduced H. Con. Res. 318, which supports the ideals and objectives of the United Nations Millennium Declaration and related Millennium Development Goals including to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. "The Millennium Development Goals embody the resolve of the international community to succeed in the fight to end extreme poverty around the globe" said Congresswoman Lee. "The achievement of these goals by 2015 is not just feasible, it is an imperative. "With five years remaining to fulfill this mission, it is time for Congress and the United States to recommit to the partnerships, obligations, reforms, and practical solutions that will be necessary to make these goals a reality. "My resolution commends the progress made to date through international efforts to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and environmental degradation while recognizing that significant works still remains. "I am hopeful the upcoming United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals will bring a renewed focus to global development efforts, which have long been recognized as essential to global peace and security, the defense and protection of basic human rights, sustained economic growth and environmental sustainability. "H. Con Res. 318, among other things, calls on the President to ensure the United States contributes meaningfully to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015.
