The event was sponsored by a large coalition of religious groups, labor unions, immigrant advocates, and civil rights organizations, including political groups such as the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.I am honored to welcome all of the hundreds of immigrant workers who have traveled long distances to be part of this historic event, said Lee. Their presence highlights the plight that immigrant workers struggle with on a daily basis, beginning with finding adequate housing, health care, and even food. The Immigration Workers Freedom Ride resembles the Freedom Rides of the civil rights movement where student activists united as they traveled through the Deep South to challenge segregation. In both cases, people scarified themselves to right injustice, to ensure that the voices of their children and grandchildren would be heard. The arrival of the Freedom Riders should remind this Congress that we still have much more to do in the way of providing for our immigrant population.
