Ms. Garcia's work, "Frutas De Otono" will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the year-long exhibit sponsored by more than 300 Members of Congress. "We are very proud to have AnJeanette's work represent our District in the Capitol during the An Artistic Discovery exhibit," said Lee. "This is a great opportunity to highlight the ways in which art education can enrich the lives of our young people." 52 high school students from the 9th Congressional District of California, which includes Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont, entered the competition. "Frutas De Otono" was chosen in April to represent California's Ninth Congressional District by a panel of judges following a month long exhibit in Oakland. "I am truly honored to have been chosen to have my artwork shown in the Capitol," said AnJeanette Garcia. "Art is not just something I do, it is my passion and an expression of who I am. It is a great honor to have won this award for doing something that I love so much." "We must always remember that activities such as art, music and sports are essential to students' development and to our sense of identity, community, and pride," said Lee.
