Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) announced that the Cypress Mandela Training Center in Oakland and the University of California at Berkeley will receive federal funding to support and enhance programs that are being offered at each institution. The Cypress Mandela Training Center will receive $55,000 from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) through the On-the-Job Training and Supportive Services Program to support the job-training programs offered at the West Oakland-based center. The funding is designed to support construction-related job-training programs for economically-disadvantaged individuals, apprentices and trainees. U.C. Berkeley will receive $18,374 in funding from the United States Department of Health and Human Services through the National Institute of Health. The funding will be used to hire a high school student, college student or teacher so they can gain valuable research-based experience during the summer over the next two years. Jobs and job-training are critical to jumpstarting our economy, said Congresswoman Lee. These funds will help people gain the skill-sets they need to compete for the jobs of the future.
