Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) is pleased to announce that the National Institute of Health (NIH) will direct $1.4 million to the Ninth Congressional District to fund a variety of biomedical research and research training projects. The funding for these projects is being made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NIH has funded biomedical research and training program at more than 3,000 institutions throughout the United States. Awardees include: University of California, Berkeley: $368,178 to research the Genetic Susceptibility to Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center in Emeryville: $54,072 to research phosphorylation and the CNS actions of ethanol Children's Hospital and Research Center of Oakland: $400,000 to fund study of apolipoprotein A-V: A Functional Proteomics Children's Hospital and Research Center of Oakland: $300,000 to study Endogenous sphingosine-1-phosphate as a radio protector of intestinal tissues Kaiser Foundation and Research Institute in Oakland: $189,272 to determine the psychosocial effects on patient adherence, allostatic load, and chronic disease University of California, Berkeley: $165,836 to support the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program These institutions have been the leaders in healthcare research not only in the state but throughout the nation, said Congresswoman Lee. This funding will allow these institutions to continue their groundbreaking work in the area of medical research.
