With the award, Oakland PIC plans to train 75 students in a 152-hour training program that will certify them as hazardous waste workers. Students will be recruited especially from inner-city Enhanced Enterprise Community zones in the City of Oakland with an emphasis on recruiting minorities and women. They will be trained in hazardous waste work, confined space entry, lead remediation, asbestos removal, and alternative and innovative technologies. Following graduation, the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council and the Association of General Contractors will assist in the placement of students in environmental jobs.I am pleased that the Oakland Private Industry Council has received this grant, said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Their innovative program of combining environmental cleanup with job creation is a win-win situation, said Lee. We must safeguard our environment in ways that both preserve it and create economic opportunities -- both through new jobs and safer cities. This grant will support the important goal of training Oakland's unemployed residents while also contributing to a cleaner environment through the reduction of dangerous contaminants, said Gay Plair Cobb, Oakland Private Industry Council's Chief Executive Officer.
