Members pressed Administrator Wheeler to update emissions standards for EtO in a timely manner that takes into account the best available science and to better communicate health risks with impacted communities. The health risks of EtO became widely known in 2016 when the U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development released an updated Integrated Risk Information System assessment and found that the inhalation cancer risk of ethylene oxide was 30 times greater than previously estimated. The EPA has not yet committed to using this health risk evaluation and has indicated it will seek comment on alternative risk assessments for consideration when finalizing the rule for EtO regulations. I have serious concerns that the EPA is beginning to undermine its own risk analysis for ethylene oxide, Lipinski said. The evidence is overwhelming that ethylene oxide poses significant cancer risks to those exposed to emissions. The EPA's own Office of Research and Development recognized these risks, but now the Agency is questioning its own scientific review. EPA must always err on the side of caution and make protecting the health and safety of communities its overriding priority. Congressman Lipinski and other Members of the Illinois Delegation have repeatedly called for the EPA to promulgate updated, health-based standards that protect communities nationwide from EtO.
