Loudermilk (R-GA) issued the following statement in support of legislation that protects law-abiding citizens’ ability to carry firearms: “The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. A few months ago, my colleagues and I were in a fight for our lives on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. Due to gun laws in Washington D.C., my colleagues and I – many of whom hold valid gun licenses in our respective states – were unarmed. I never want to be in a gun fight again, but definitely not without a gun. "Our Constitution is clear; ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.’ Governments at all levels have sought to restrict our Second Amendment protections, but the House has just taken a momentous step in protecting this right. “Law abiding citizens should not have to wonder if their right to carry is 'valid' from state to state. This legislative package, which includes the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, protects a law-abiding citizens’ right to protect themselves across state lines.” Background H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act · Allows law-abiding individuals with valid concealed carry permits to carry a concealed handgun in any state that allows concealed carry. · Retains private individual, state or local government’s ability to restrict the possession of concealed firearms on certain property. · Clarifies that federal law enforcement officers, including retired and off-duty officers, are not subject to gun restrictions in federally-defined school zones.
