WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that the spending bill that funds the federal government through September 2020 includes $40 million in federal funding, an increase of $30 million from the fiscal year 2019 enacted level, for a homeland security grant program to support nonprofit organizations located outside of designated Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) jurisdictions that are determined to be at high risk of a terrorist attack. I believe nonprofits and religious institutions are the foundation of many great communities across the country, and they must be protected, said Congresswoman Lowey. In 2018, I established a nonprofit security grant program for those outside of UASI regions, and today, I've increased funding for that program by 300 percent from $10 million to $40 million. With anti-Semitism and other hate crimes on the rise in New York and across the country, this increase is essential to keeping our communities safe. JCC Rockland is grateful to Congresswoman Lowey for her efforts in helping to secure $40 million in Homeland Security Funding for the areas outside UASI, said David Kirschtel, CEO of JCC Rockland. This increase of $30 million is critical to support the security needs of the greater community. JCC Rockland was extremely appreciative to be included as a recipient of funding in the first round of funds two years ago which was the first time non-profits in Rockland County were eligible. As a Jewish Community Center located close to the NY State Thruway and the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, we are hopeful that with this significant increase in funding we will be able to secure additional dollars to secure our Campus. Congresswoman Lowey has been a true champion to the Jewish and greater community, and we are grateful for her efforts. While Westchester is part ofa UASI region, Rockland is not and was unable to access federal funding to protect its nonprofits until Lowey established this important program in 2018. As Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Lowey was instrumental in securing this funding along with other funding critical for fiscal year 2020 to enhance regional preparedness and security capabilities including: $710 million for firefighter equipment and staffing grants; $665 million for Urban Areas Security Initiative Grants, including $50 million for non-profit organizations; $560 million for the State Homeland Security Grant Program, an $35 million increase from the FY2018 enacted level; and $125 million for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.
