Despite controlling the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate, Republicans have advanced yet another stop-gap spending bill that makes a complete mess of the very basics of governing and fails the American people. The bill does not include a long-term reauthorization of the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Any short term extension threatens childrens health coverage. States are already running out of money and freezing their programs putting at risk 9 million children and families who depend on the program. This bill also breaks the Presidents promise to protect young people who were brought to this country as small children from deportation by not including the bipartisan DREAM Act. Republicans will allow thousands of young people to live in fear of being deported during the holidays.Tearing families apart to achieve a political end does not reflect American values. In addition, by failing to bolster their Medicaid programs, the Republican disaster supplemental short-changes the hurricane ravaged areas of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Congressional Republicans want to pass this bill and go home for the holidays. I cannot support a bill that leaves so many urgent needs unaddressed.
