Congressman Ben Ray Lujn (D-N.M.), the U.S. House Assistant Speaker, successfully secured key provisions to bolster broadband access in theBroadband DATA Act that passed the House today. The bipartisan Broadband DATA Act directs the Federal Communications Commission to issue new rules that require the improved collection and dissemination of broadband data. The legislation includes Congressman Lujn's provisions to: Leverage our nation's postal trucks and other federal fleet vehicles to collect broadband data; Help consumers and state, tribal, and local governments meaningfully participate in the collection of broadband data by empowering them to challenge flawed coverage maps. In July, Lujn introduced the Map Improvement Act as part of a broadband infrastructure package to expand access and to ensure that investments in broadband infrastructure are targeted to the areas that need it most including rural communities by establishing more reliable coverage maps and data that accurately depict what people are experiencing. In New Mexico, less than half of rural New Mexicans have access to high-speed, fixed broadband. Broadband access is critical for the success of New Mexico families, connecting New Mexicans to a wealth of information. For too long, the digital divide has left rural and underserved New Mexicans behind - impacting education, public safety, and economic opportunities. I'm proud to have worked to pass this critical and much-needed legislation to help ensure the accuracy of broadband mapping, said Lujn. Investing in broadband infrastructure remains a top priority for me, and I'll continue fighting to bolster broadband in our state.
