U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Lujn (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the House passage of legislation to protect access to the ballot box and help end voter suppression: The Supreme Court's reckless decision to gut the Voting Rights Act opened the doors to voter suppression that has continued to disenfranchise communities of color and Native communities. No eligible person should be denied the fundamental right to vote, but we know that efforts to block access to the ballot box are deliberate, political, and undeniably damaging to impacted communities. Civil rights giants including those who serve in this Congress fought for our right to vote. We have a responsibility to continue that fight by pushing back against every attempt to disenfranchise voters. As we celebrate this victory, we also continue to push for passage of the Native American Voting Rights Act to safeguard Native voting rights.
