While there is much more work to be done, this year has represented a strong start as the House continues to push for a safer and more secure America. “While the President continues to reiterate his failed tactics to combat radical Islamic terrorists, admitting the criticism against his strategy is legitimate, the House is working to put real plans into action,” said Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02). “I am proud of the several bills I supported that will help ensure the safety and security of Kansans and folks across the country. In 2016, I will continue to build upon the great steps the House has done to protect Kansans while also looking at other areas to bolster our defenses.” Working to Stop the Transfer of Dangerous Detainees from GTMO to Fort Leavenworth: Despite the clear wishes of the American people, President Obama has continued his efforts to transfer the dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo Bay to the United States, and potentially to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. This year, Congresswoman Jenkins supported legislation prohibiting any transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees. This is something the President’s own Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, says makes it illegal for President Obama to move the detainees. Congresswoman Jenkins has led the charge to remind the President that folks in Kansas don’t want to close Guantanamo, and that any executive action to do so would be unconstitutional. Strengthening the Visa Waiver Program and Securing our Borders: In the wake of increasing terrorism around the world, Congress must do everything possible to keep Americans safe. That’s why Congresswoman Jenkins voted in support of legislation to pause the influx of Syrian and Iraqi refugees until the FBI and other agencies can assure us that each refugee does not possess any threat to the American people. That is also why Congresswoman Jenkins voted to tighten the restrictions on the Visa Waiver program, so that no one is able to abuse the system for malicious reasons. When it comes to protecting Americans lives, we cannot afford to take risks and the only option must be stringent procedures designed to ensure every American can live safely. Increasing Defense Spending: A strong America is a safe America. This year, Congresswoman Jenkins voted to increase military spending, providing important resources for our national defense and improving pay for the brave men and women fighting to keep this country safe. America must be able to aggressively combat terrorism around the world, and this increase of funding means our military has the capability and financing to effectively pursue that goal. Enhancing America’s Cybersecurity: National security is entering a new age where what happens online is just as important as what happens offline. Cybersecurity is crucial to protecting American lives.
