The city's mandate, which is set to take effect October 29, currently does not include a testing option. "In an effort to protect New Yorkers from COVID-19, Mayor de Blasio's mandate may lead to a shortage of first responders that would make our city more vulnerable to crime, fires, and other emergency situations," said Congresswoman Malliotakis. "At a time when crime is skyrocketing, our city simply cannot afford to lose experienced detectives and police officers. We've already lost seasoned members of the force because of anti-police policies and rhetoric coming out of City Hall and this mandate will surely lead to more retirements across the department. Likewise, a shortage of potentially thousands of firefighters would result in longer response times. I don't believe the Mayor has fully thought through the consequences of this directive, including the increased potential for death in emergency situations." As of October 19, the overall NYPD vaccination rate was 71%. The FDNY says only 60% of its uniformed workforce, including firefighters and EMS workers, are vaccinated, with the same rate of vaccination for sanitation workers.
