Maloney (NY-12) joined Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), the Second Avenue Subway Merchant's Association, the General Contractors Association of New York, Transport Workers Union Local 100, and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce to call on Congress and the Trump Administration to pass bipartisan infrastructure legislation to fund infrastructure projects across the country, including projects like the next phases of the Second Avenue Subway and support improvements to the New York City transit system. Reps. Maloney and Espaillat are calling on Congress and the Trump Administration to support H.R. 1664,Investing in America: A Penny for Progress Act, a bill that would raise the gas tax to provide an additional $500 billion in infrastructure investments, including $420 million in annual transit investments in New York. They have also sent the House Appropriations Committee a request for increase in New Starts funding in the end-of-year spending deal to continue development of the Second Avenue Subway and vital transit projects like it around the country. The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway has been a resounding success but New Yorkers shouldnt have to wait another century for the full line to be built, saidRep. Maloney. This new subway line wouldnt have been built without the $1.3 billion in federal funding I helped secure. Congressman Espaillat and I are now working together to increase federal funding for new transit projects so that when Phase 2 is eligible, it wont have to wait years for the federal investment it will need. The Second Avenue Subway is a high-impact transportation infrastructure project that provides a critical link between the East Side of Manhattan and the rest of the city, saidRep. Espaillat. Phase 2 of the project will help to improve commuter transit, ease overcrowding, and spur economic development and job creation in the East Harlem community I represent. I am proud to stand with my colleagues during todays announcement as the expansion of the Second Avenue Subway embodies our efforts to highlight the critical importance of our need to invest in infrastructure networks at home and around the country. After being talked about for nearly a century, the new Second Avenue Subway was made possible when Rep. Maloney secured $1.3 billion in New Starts funding and New York State invested $3.3 billion for the project. With nearly 200,000 daily riders, the new line has helped to change the way New Yorkers travel, reducing commute time and decreasing overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue line. Additional federal funding is required to continue this progress by extending the Q line north to 125thSt. and south to Hanover Square.
