In September 2018, Kansas launched its Maternal Mortality Review to better understand the trends associated with maternal and pregnancy-related deaths.It is astep toward collecting better data and determining more specific causes of death. Marshall and Bera discuss the potential impact of meaningful data combined with proper health care incentives, from conception through postpartum. States and local communities have begun the hard work of learning where and how our society is failing moms..Congress and the Trump administration focused on helping states do this by passing the Preventing Maternal Deaths Act last December.Reps. Marshall and Bera wrote.This law is currently helping states establish and expand Maternal Mortality Review Committees to better understand the causes of maternal deaths, including disparities in maternal care, health risks and patient outcomes. Marshall and Beracontinue toexplain that current payment models can result in fragmented care,recommending that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation consider payment models that incentivize health care providers to work together to protect the full scope of maternal care. Armed with the right data, we can begin to make smarter policy recommendations and clinical decisions that will address the gaps in prenatal and postpartum care.
