As ranking member of the Environment Sub-committee of the House Committee on Science, Space,and Technology, U.S. Congressman Roger Marshall, M.D. has continued to advocate for advances in weather modeling and predictions, including partnerships with the private sector to ensure the U.S. remains at the forefront of forecasting. The impacts of severe weather events across this country have made it clear that the U.S. must continue to advance it's work in this area potentially changing the way it models and predicts severe weather and natural disasters,said Rep. Marshall.Additionally, more pro-longed weather effects, like drought and flooding, can also play a role in the success of many industries, including agriculture. The U.S. has slowly fallen behind other countries in its ability to timely and accurately predict storms and weather events. That's not acceptable for our farmers, who rely on the weather reports to make planting and harvest decisions, nor rural families who need to know when to prepare for severe weather. In 2017, Congress passed the Research Forecasting Innovation Act (the Weather Act) and reauthorized the National Integrated Drought Information System. The Weather Act was the first authorizing legislation to address weather forecasting in 25 years and prioritized improving weather data, modeling, computing, and forecasting. The legislation mandated the creation of the Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) to crowdsource the expertise of the private sector and research communities to improve forecasting models. The week, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Environment Subcommittee, heard testimony from experts on the work being done by EPIC and advances in forecasting models. I am proud of the work we have done on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee to advance our understanding of weather and create public-private partnerships to utilize all available technologies and experts,said Rep. Marshall. The Federal Government should be doing more to utilize the resources of private companies and university researchers, who are often the leading sources of innovations. In addition to having world-class facilities and minds, private companies and academics are extremely flexible in research development and cost-effective in their methods.
