Large numbers of migrant families arriving at the southern border have resulted in conditions that are reported to be unsafe and unsanitary for those in custody. Meaningful measures must take place to secure our border but treating people humanely and upholding the rule of law are not incompatible. Compassion and human decency demand that we place children and families in shelters that meet basic standards for food, sanitation and medical care. Both the House, the Senate and the President must act quickly to correct these conditions and keep families together, said McAdams. McAdams said that the Homeland Security Department apprehended 132,887 migrants at the border in May, the highest monthly rate in 13 years. Meantime, the number of migrant children referred to the Health and Human Services Department has significantly increased. Facilities are at capacity, resulting in the use of inadequate, unlicensed shelters and a lack of supplies and medical personnel. McAdams said the legislation prioritizes the use of community-based residential care outside of institutional shelter facilities to house unaccompanied children. It also requires Health and Human Services to speed up identification and approval of sponsors and to issue frequent reports on children who were separated from their parents or guardians. This emergency shows how critical it is for all sides in Congress to come together on immigration reforms that will address our broken system, secure the border and improve the means for legal immigration to our country, said McAdams. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
