https://mcadams.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=217 McAdams votes to give more time for states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment 2020-02-13 2020 2020-02 Democrat House UT Ben McAdams M001209 mcadams.house.gov     legacy Washington, D.C.Congressman Ben McAdams today voted for a measure that would extend the time for states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. The ERA was originally adopted by a two-thirds vote of the House and the Senate in 1972, with a seven-year deadline for ratification. Thirty-five states ratified the ERA in the 1970s and three have done so in recent years, including Virginia, which adopted it in January 2020. Amending the U.S. Constitution requires approval from three-fourths of the states. I'm a dad of four, including twin teenagers a boy and a girl who all dream about the life they'll build for themselves. I want for them a world rich with opportunity where in no case is a door open to my sons but not my daughter. Utah's history is a legacy of strong, independent women leaders, shaped by our pioneer heritage to build prosperity in our western home. From Eliza R. snow and Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon, to Aileen Clyde and Olene Walker, Utah has been blessed by women's efforts to strengthen our communities. Today's vote won't finish the task of Constitutional equality, nor will it end discrimination on the basis of sex. It's an important piece of the conversation, with so much more work to do in areas like improving STEM and other educational opportunities for girls and equal pay for equal work. My vote today is to keep the conversation moving forward, said McAdams. McAdams said that Section 1 of the proposed amendment states: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. McAdams said ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment is supported by the American Association of University Women, the YWCA, the League of Women Voters of Utah, Utah State University, and the National Association of Women Business Owners, among others. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
