https://mcadams.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=442 McAdams ban on funding for new explosive nuclear weapons tests in House-passed defense bill 2020-07-21 2020 2020-07 Democrat House UT Ben McAdams M001209 mcadams.house.gov     legacy Washington D.C.Congressman Ben McAdams supported a defense bill passed by the House which includes his amendment to prohibit funding to restart nuclear weapons testing and his bipartisan bill to combat trafficking by targeting money laundering. The 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)H.R. 6395 passed the House with support from both sides of the aisle. McAdams put forward his amendment on nuclear weapons testing after reports of discussions by White House officials to conduct an explosive nuclear weapons test. The Senate version of the NDAA includes $10 million for the purpose of preparing for such a test. Thousands of Utahns are still dealing with trauma inflicted by bombs exploded from decades past, leaving a legacy of illness, suffering and death. Why would we ever go down that path again? said McAdams. The U.S. maintains the most effective and capable nuclear deterrent in the world. We have done so while observing a moratorium on explosive nuclear testing for the past three decades. McAdams said the bill also expresses the sense of Congress that the U.S. should compensate any miners, workers and downwind populations that suffered from the effects of uranium mining and nuclear testing during the Cold War. McAdams successfully added his bipartisan bill targeting illegal trafficking and money launderers as an amendment. The STIFLE Act (H.R. 7592) combats illicit actors trafficking in drugs, arms, wildlife and humans, by cracking down on dark markets' used to finance and hide their crimes and profits. McAdams said the NDAA meets U.S. military readiness needs and supports the nation's military men and women and their families. It also authorizes a 3 percent military pay raise, and a Pandemic Preparedness and Resilience National Security Fund to strengthen the nation's defenses to pandemics. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
