The House passed the Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for a Lasting Democracy (SHIELD) ActH.R. 4617. Without question, foreigners extensively interfered in the 2016 election, weaponizing misinformation and computer network hacking. We've already been warned that they won't stop in the next election. Republicans and Democrats agree that American elections must be decided by Americans, and this measure closes gaps in the law that allow foreign nationals and foreign governments to threaten the integrity of a fundamental part of our democracy, said McAdams. McAdams said the recently released bipartisan Senate report into the 2016 election meddling says that Russian information warriors literally celebrated their success with a toast of champagne. The report summarizes how successfully online warfare was fought through alternative facts and phony social media accounts. The SHIELD Act protects U.S. elections by: Creating a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign governments and their agents Improving transparency of online political advertisements Closing loopholes that allow foreign nationals and foreign governments to spend in U.S. elections Restricting the exchange of campaign information between candidates and foreign government and their agents The SHIELD Act incorporates provisions backed by both Republicans and Democrats and is supported by numerous organizations including Common Cause, the NAACP, the Brennan Center for Justice, and the Network Lobby for Catholic Social Justice. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
