Rep. McCollum released the following statement: "I am so grateful to Ramsey County Commissioner Reinhardt and the Association of Minnesota Counties for securing unanimous support for the MRRRI resolution at the National Association of Counties Annual Conference. MRRRI will secure federal grant opportunities up and down the river's corridor for counties to invest in the health and resilience of their communities, which will also benefit local economies. Federal, state, and local coordination is paramount to ensuring the initiative addresses the priorities of the communities most affected by flooding, runoff, pollution, and other risks to the river's health. I look forward to continuing to work with Commissioner Reinhardt in advancing this collaborative effort to restore and strengthen the Mississippi River." Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt, Vice Chair of the NACo Resilient Counties Advisory Board, added: "MRRRI is exactly the right approach to securing local participation in solving a national problem. The Mississippi River is vital to the health of the nation and every county along its 2,300-mile journey from the headwaters in northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. I am honored that Congresswoman McCollum asked me to secure support for MRRRI from the National Association of Counties. This is exactly the type of partnership approach that local governments need to help us enhance river restoration, resilience projects, and program activities along the Mississippi River." Background: The Mississippi River flows more than 2,300 miles through 10 states, and provides drinking water to more than 20 million people in 50 cities. The river supports more than 780 species of fish and wildlife and is a vital corridor for migratory birds. The Mississippi River also serves as a major shipping and transportation corridor and has a recreation-based economy that generates nearly $500 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 1.5 million people. Congresswoman McCollum introduced H.R. 4202 in June 2021 to formally authorize the Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative.
