https://mccollum.house.gov/media/press-releases/mccollum-statement-pentagons-acknowledgement-error-deadly-drone-strike McCollum Statement on Pentagon's Acknowledgement of Error in Deadly Drone Strike 2021-09-17 2021 2021-09 Democrat House MN Betty McCollum M001143 mccollum.house.gov mccollum https://mccollum.house.gov/media/press-releases scraper Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense (HAC-D), issued the following statement today: "The Pentagon has acknowledged that the August 29, 2021 drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed 10 people, including 7 children, was an error. In fact, it was an unacceptable catastrophic military failure. The target of the strike, Mr. Zemari Ahmadi, was a humanitarian worker employed by a U.S. aid organization, not an ISIS terrorist. The killing of Mr. Ahmadi and his family members was not an accident, it was deadly military malpractice. "As Chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I am calling on President Biden and Secretary of Defense Austin to hold accountable the military officials responsible for ordering this drone strike and the deaths of an innocent Afghan family. Our military has the ability to use precise and overwhelming deadly force against our adversaries in the defense of our national security, but this power demands more than circumstantial assumptions when the consequences are life and death. This failure cannot be excused or justified by the ‘fog of war.' Congress and the American people must demand accountability for the deaths of Mr. Ahmadi and his family." 1 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z 2026-04-06T20:17:01Z
